So, what is even papdi chaat
You are aware of papdi right? It is a deep-fried crispy and flat dough wafer that is often used in making appetizers and chaats. Well, with the sprouting number of chaat shops on the street and trolleys, you must have come across papdi many a time while you went to the thele wale bhaiya for the delicious and juicy chaat with your friends.
In a typical papdi chaat, you have the papdis placed at the bottom and then topped with chickpeas and potatoes in the next layer. Following that whipped yogurt and seasonings are drizzled upon the same. Different chutneys and sev go on top with a drizzle of finely chopped coriander leaves. Sometimes you will also find pomegranate arils on top of it.
We all know that papdi or dahi papdi chaat is a popular dish from North Indian states like Delhi. Along with papdi chaat, you will find several other options like dahi bhalla, and vada chaat on the menu in the cart.
Why should you make dahi papdi chaat at home?
Well, there are multiple reasons why you should be having papdi chaat at home. Being salty, spicy, tangy, and flavorful, papdi chaat is simply lovely and too amazing to miss out on. Every bite is delightful and packed with a crunchy essence, gooey filling, and tangy hints. The combination of potatoes and chickpeas stands out for us. The presence of chilled yogurt in the chaat gives it a cooling effect.

Moreover, let's be honest! If you have zero preparation in the house and a couple of visitors like friends or family have shown up, you can go ahead and make this minimal platter in no time. Plus, it is vibrant and yummy and goes great with tea in the evening.
What are the common ingredients you will need for making papdi dahi chaat
- Papdi and flat puri- Of course, you cannot make papdi chaat without papdi. If you are under a time constraint and cannot make papdi at home then store-bought ones are good enough too. These puris are made with all-purpose flour. You can use fried papdi but if you wish to be on the healthier side then baked papdi is also good to go ahead with.
- Chickpeas- You could opt for dry chickpeas because personally, that is our favorite but if you prefer to soak them and then toss them into your chaat, that is also a viable option. Boiled chickpeas taste good too.
- Boiled potatoes- You need a couple of boiled potatoes! Using an instant pot, you will need only eight to ten minutes. If you are using a manual pressure cooker then two whistles are enough to tenderize the potatoes.
- Plain yogurt- Chill and full-fat yogurt is the best option when you are adding the same to any kind of chaat.
- Powdered sugar- Sugar dust dissolves much faster in the yogurt so we always recommend powdered sugar.
- Green chutney- The gorgeous mint and coriander chutney is essential for making chaat.
- Tamarind chutney- The sweet and delicious tamarind chutney with a hint of sourness is all you need for your papdi dahi chaat.
- Sev- Toppings like sev are perfect to give a crispy and crunchy texture to your papdi chaat.
- Pomegranate- Our personal favorite is pomegranate arils which give vibrancy as well as a sweet hint in every bite.
- Fresh coriander stems- You shall need freshly chopped coriander or cilantro to garnish before serving.
Finally, assemble
Once you have collected all the ingredients, and boiled the potatoes and chickpeas, now all you gotta do is assemble the chaat on the plate. First, the papdis are placed, followed by potatoes, dahi, all the chutneys, sev, and the greens.
Based on your spice tolerance level, you can choose the amount of chili chutney or chili powder that you wish to include in the dish. That's all for enjoying a delicious plate of dahi papdi chaat! Now dig in!
