Halloween brings with it a fair share of joy and jubilance! There are several customs and traditions which are observed and houses are beautifully adorned! The season is also remarkable as we indulge in wonderful and quirky treats, drinks, desserts, and other grand meals! Parties are held and people show up in scary costumes.
We are all aware of the custom of "Trick or treating" among the little ones! They go around the neighborhood dressed as ghosts, zombies, and witches, knocking at every household to fill their hands with candies and treats! Today we are going to learn some more about the traditions of treats accompanying Halloween and help you to make some of these as well.
Where did the custom of treating arrive from?
In Medieval Europe, the poor kids often would go around asking for food in exchange for prayers for the deceased on the Celtic holiday Samhain — celebrated on October 31. Everyone served them with something nice as they would gather to chant a prayer for the peaceful afterlife and journey of the soul of their loved ones beyond the materialistic world. However, during this time, the tradition or practice was called "souling". Everyone believed that the souls roamed around freely on earth that day and only community prayers and chants of the little ones could provide them peace.
What were the advances made in the custom of treating?
Over the years, the custom of treating or souling saw a remarkable variation! The Catholic Church had co-opted Samhain and the Celtic New Year, rechristening them 'All Hallow's Eve' and 'All Souls' Day.' This happened by the 19th century and later instead of just offering prayers, the kids would engage in singing songs, making a joke, or a small performance at the doorstep. It was termed "mumming".
Young women came up with many tactics to discover the identity of their future husband like throwing an orange peel or eggs into the bowl or waiting to see their future spouse's face on the mirror of a candlelit room! The concept of making candies did not show up until the late 1920s.
However, during this time, as treats, a round cake, called the soul cake was offered to the kids!
What is a soul cake?
The main composition of the soul cake comprised nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, and raisins, and stamped with a cross on top that symbolized a soul being saved from Purgatory. Initially, these cakes were placed at the doorstep to keep away bad souls and convey one's love for the deceased in the house. Soon they got converted to a treating custom for the little ones. Nuts and fruits also showed up as treats to the kids, especially apples!
How did Halloween costumes emerge?
Earlier the concept of wearing scary costumes on the day of Halloween was called "guising". In the mediaeval times, the Celtics would dress up this way to blend with the ghosts so that they would not be attacked or taunted by the souls. Later other myriad costumes started coming up eventually. In the 19th century when immigrants came to America from Europe they brought along the custom of Halloween as well.
So over the years, Halloween seems to have changed its form and shape! Slowly, it acquired the modern-day traditions and customs which are observed today. But after so much discussion in the past, we would like to lighten the mood with some treats for you! Let's go!
