Our houses need repair from time to time to maintain the shine and glaze of a happy home. You cannot afford to put up a beautiful and expensive picture on a wall that is chipping off. The paint may be fading or coming off in places. This is time you realise you have to take care of the walls. They are the foundation of your houses. A prominent part of the rooms is covered with walls, hence the first thing you notice once you walk in is the faults and cracks on it. This might just spoil the entire aesthetics of your house. No amount of decorations or lavish furniture and interior decor setups can cover up an ugly wall.
So the next thing you decide to do is paint the walls and initiate a renovation plan. But let me tell you, the idea of painting the walls will only materialise into a fruitful outcome if you have the plasters right. There are also several places you need to apply plaster before you start the redecoration process. Let's see how we can go about it!
1. Check the spots
You need to first locate all the places around the house which have suffered damage over the years. Pay attention to the details around the house. For instance, the spot where the nail was hammered to hang the portrait. Sometimes the wait of the painting, which if allowed to hang in one place for a long time, will deepen the hole. It may also give rise to cracks along the edges. So try to remove all the photo frames from the wall from time to time to fill up the edges with plaster and repaint over it.
2. Repair the corners
The corners are also more prone to getting damaged because we quite easily overlook them. The wind, the rain and weather conditions attacking the wall from outside can do heavy damage to the insides of the house. The worst-case scenario could be the water seeping in through the bricks and getting absorbed by the cement. This will result in the water especially the moisture feeling through the bricks and reaching the insides leading to patches of wetness on the wall. In the long run, this will weaken the base of the paint and result in chipping off.
The area might inflate and the walls might show signs of bubble formation in the painted region. If this happens you are expected to remove the entire paint and start from the base of decorating the wall and repairing it. First, the holes and empty crooks need to be filled up with plaster. Then even it out by applying plaster of Paris on the entire surface. Let it dry for a couple of days. You are supposed to wait and observe whether the plaster is drying up properly. Wait unless it is completely dried up before reapplying the paint. If you still observe signs of wetness, consult an expert.
3. Steps to take before plastering
Repair work is messy and requires you to make proper arrangements before you embark on the mission.
- Make sure to cover up the furniture before you start your work.
- The paintings, showpieces and other accessories should be removed or else you might end up breaking them or making them dirty.
- Then while we focus on the walls, make sure you do not forget to clean them first. Remove the old paint with the help of sandpaper and then smooth the surface.
- Next step you need to remove the plaster which was applied earlier so that you can reach the base of the layers.
- Now start afresh by applying the plaster. Ask for the help of an expert to maintain the ratio of ingredient to water.
4. Kinds of damages the wall can suffer
- Cracks- over time the walls can suffer stress and damage due to the installation of new shelves and wall hangings. The cracks and holes may also arise around the windows and door edges.
- Damage- other signs of damage could be accidentally pushing the furniture into the wall or heavy substances like a football hitting it. Discolouration of the walls may also be a reason for you to consider repainting it and hence fix the plaster.
5. Plastering of the ceiling
Sometimes your ceilings are also subjected to damage due to weather conditions like extreme heat or prolong rain. In that case, they are subjected to cracks and breakage. You need to be careful to notice these damages or you shall have to call the experts and the process of repair might cost you a lot. So take precautions beforehand. Any minor signs of damage should be treated immediately with plastering the holes and hairline cracks. Buy pre mix primers and plaster to do the repair work without any hassle
